Inclusive Playground at Zorinsky Lake Park: A Game Changer for Omaha Families

Vibrant inclusive playground in Omaha with colorful equipment.

A New Dawn for Play: Inclusive Playground at Zorinsky Lake Park

For many parents, the playground represents a joyous escape, a place where children can nurture friendships, test their physical abilities, and simply be kids. However, the playground experience is not universally accessible. This reality struck two Omaha moms, Meaghan Walls and Lauren Citro, reminding us of the challenges faced by families with children who have developmental or physical disabilities.

Barriers to Play: Challenges Faced by Children with Disabilities

Imagine being a child who cannot fully enjoy the simple pleasure of climbing the jungle gym or swinging on a swing because the facilities are not designed with your needs in mind. For Lauren’s son, Brody, who was born with Spina Bifida, traditional playgrounds pose significant physical obstacles. This inspired the duo's mission to create a space where all children could play together.

From Idea to Reality: The Birth of Imagine Inclusion

In that pivotal conversation over coffee, Meaghan and Lauren were fueled by a shared determination to not only advocate for their children but also to transform the community's recreational landscape. They formed a nonprofit organization named Imagine Inclusion, dedicated to fostering inclusive outdoor recreational opportunities in Omaha.

Making It Happen: Community Support and Fundraising

The duo’s journey led them to Zorinsky Lake Park at 156th and F streets, a choice driven by the area's popularity and the existing playground's need for an overhaul. Secure funding was crucial, and in May 2019, Imagine Inclusion launched its fundraising efforts. Notable support came from City Councilmember Don Rowe, who saw the potential value in the project and helped secure $50,000 in discretionary funds.

With funding from the city, and subsequent contributions from local businesses and generous community members, the vision started taking shape. From idea to fruition, the project achieved its goal of $1.3 million, ensuring the construction of the first accessible playground west of 84th Street. This community-backed initiative embodies the spirit of inclusivity and the importance of play.

Designing an Inclusive Space for All

Working alongside Outdoor Recreation and equipment supplier Landscape Structures, Imagine Inclusion carefully curated the playground's design. With features like the “cozy domes” and an in-ground merry-go-round, this space aims to engage children of all abilities, fostering not only physical fun but also social interaction among peers.

A Playground for Everyone: The Importance of Inclusion

As the playground at Zorinsky Lake Park prepares to open, it represents more than just a new recreational area; it serves as a beacon of inclusivity, ensuring that no child is left out. This initiative reflects a crucial understanding: inclusive play is essential for emotional, social, and physical development, enriching the lives of all community members.

Encouraging Community Involvement and Support

Homeowners and renters across Omaha are encouraged to advocate for such inclusive spaces in their neighborhoods. As young families, tech-savvy professionals, and first-time homebuyers move into the area, collective support for initiatives like Imagine Inclusion can establish a community that prioritizes connection, support, and growth. The new playground at Zorinsky Lake Park could be just the beginning of collaborative efforts to enhance the lifestyle of Omaha residents.

Let us celebrate the strides made in our community, and push for nurturing environments for all children. Take action today by supporting local initiatives that foster inclusivity in public spaces. Together, we can create a landscape where every child, regardless of ability, can discover joy, friendship, and a sense of belonging.
